Leadership and Teamwork

Experience in Managing a Sports Club
Context
I served as the secretary of the Gold Coast Griffith Badminton Club and was actively involved in reviving the club, which was on the verge of defunction. Over the past year, I helped organize weekly events and navigated several challenges, including funding issues, low participation, and the high cost of venue rentals.
Action
To address these challenges, I collaborated with the student guild, sought advice from the previous committee, and reached out to external schools to secure venues. As participation grew, managing check-ins for 40+ members became overwhelming, so I transitioned to using Griffith University’s online event management platform for ticketing and payments. I also researched the best badminton equipment and refined the court setup by incorporating feedback from club members. With each event, I became more familiar with handling logistics, ensuring smoother operations.
Result
By the end of the semester, I was proud to have contributed to transforming the club into a popular and sustainable sports group with regular attendees. I took the lead in recruiting and onboarding new committee members by documenting our processes and organizing introductory meetings. I created a positive and supportive environment that encouraged new leaders to express their ideas and provided a smooth transition to the next generation of club managers.
Learning
This experience strengthened my leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. I learned to adapt quickly, communicate effectively, and make thoughtful decisions under pressure. Managing the club also developed my resilience and flexibility, essential traits for thriving in professional environments. The skills I gained through event management, collaboration, and leadership will benefit me in future data-related roles and help me excel in professional settings requiring cross-functional teamwork.
